The following are general descriptions of the four different skills that are taught in the Academic Skills program as well as the TOEFL Preparation class and the Advanced Writing, Reading and Grammar Workshop.  The focus of individual classes will vary depending on the level of the class and the individual instructor

Understanding English Grammar

The focus of these grammar classes is to introduce students to grammatical rules in English that are new to them and to review grammatical structures that have been learned previously. Students are taught to apply these rules in order to become more accurate both in written and in conversational English.

Academic Writing
The focus of these classes is the development and improvement of written English in preparation for college-level writing.  Our aim is to help students improve their writing through a process of editing and revising in which they are taught the elements of effective essay writing: outlining, organizing and composing, as well as identifying their own grammar mistakes.

Academic Reading, Vocabulary and Test-Taking Skills
Reading, Vocabulary and Test-Taking Skills classes are designed to improve students' reading comprehension and critical thinking skills by teaching them specific reading strategies. These include summarizing, skimming, scanning, paraphrasing, reading for inference, predicting and guessing meaning from context.  These classes also prepare students for the reading portions of standardized college entrance tests. Vocabulary building, word formation and dictionary usage are also emphasized.

Communication Workshops
Communication Workshops add a new, creative element to the IELI evening program. These multi-skilled classes target specific interests and needs of our students.  Students can choose from classes that focus on academic, cultural or work-related themes. Topics may change each semester depending on student request.

TOEFL iBT Preparation
This TOEFL iBT Preparation class introduces students to all of the components of the new TOEFL iBT exam.  Through practice exams in class, students will increase the speed at which they take the exam.  The class also provides an excellent review of grammar, syntax, vocabulary and idioms as well as practice for the written portions of the TOEFL iBT.  It is recommended that students who take this class be at the High-Intermediate through Advanced levels, although a placement test is not necessary if this is the only class you want to take at the IELI.  This class may be taken alone or as part of the full-time or part-time programs.

Advanced Writing, Reading and Grammar Workshop
Have you finished level 8? Do you feel that your writing could use a little more help? Do you want to further improve your reading skills and review those really problematic grammar points that are so difficult to master in writing?  If so, then this is the class for you.

This workshop will include:
- Writing various types of academic related essays
- Reading and discussing an entire novel plus shorter
  non-fiction articles
- Grammar lessons based on students' particular needs
