FAQ About Programs and Services
Frequently asked Questions about Programs and Services

Q: How long are the semesters at the IELI?
A semester of day or evening Academic Skills or English for Success classes at the Institute is 8-weeks long. Part-time Saturday classes are also 8-weeks long. The Professional English Academy classes run in 6-week sessions.  We also have mixed level programs which are offered only in the summer and run for 4 weeks (see July in the Big Apple).

Q: Can I register for only a portion of a semester? For example, is it possible to take classes for only 4 weeks if I do not want to study for the entire 2 months?
No. The IELI programs are designed for specific periods of time. In order to benefit from each semester and make significant progress, students are expected to arrive on time and complete the full 8 weeks.

Q: Why do I have to take a placement test?
The IELI has classes in all levels, ranging from beginner through very advanced.  In order for us to make sure that you study in the right level for you, it is necessary for every student in our academic program to take a placement test before registering for classes the first time.

Q: How many levels are there in your program? How many can I complete in one semester?
There are a total of 8 levels (levels 2 - 9) in our day program , and 5 levels in the Evening and Saturday programs  -  Beginner (level 1), High-Beginner (level 2), Intermediate (levels 3 and 4) , High-Intermediate (levels 5 and 6) and Advanced (levels 7 and 8).  Most students complete one level of English each semester in the day program. However, students in the evening in the intermediate through advanced levels may need 2 terms to complete a level, depending on their original placement level .  All levels in the Saturday Program take 16 weeks (2 terms) to complete.

Q: Can new students choose the program and time they want to take classes?
New students can register for the program and time of their choice if there is space available in their level. Continuing students are given the opportunity to pre-register for the next term.  Any spaces still available after pre-registration are open to new students.  We cannot guarantee space in any particular class.

Q: What can I do if I find that my class is too easy or too difficult?
Speak to your teachers during the first week of classes. If you are in your first term, and you are in the wrong level and there is space in a new class for you, your teacher may recommend a transfer.

Q: Can I change my class schedule after the semester begins?
Changes in class schedules depend on space availability. Students may request a change in their schedules during the first two weeks of the semester.  Changes in schedules after the second week of classes is very unusual and requires approval by the directors.

Q: What can I do if I cannot continue to attend my classes?
You must first inform all of your teachers that you will not continue to attend classes. Then you must inform the IELI Registration office. If you have a student visa (F-1), you must speak with someone in the Student Services department.

Q: Can I receive a refund for the classes I did not take?
Students may request a refund during the first two weeks of the semester. No refund requests will be approved after the second week of classes. See the IELI refund policy on the bottom of the tuition page.

Q: What can I do if I have a problem with my class, another student or the teacher?
First, speak with your teacher. If you still have a problem, come to the IELI reception desk. The receptionist will give you the name of a supervisor or director with whom you can discuss your problem in private.

Q:How many students are there in each class?
There is a maximum of 22 students in each class.  However, many classes have an average of 16-18 students.  Some classes are smaller.
