English For Success Program
Building the English Skills You Need

Evening Program

Students who would like to study in the evening, may take courses with a flexible choice of times.  They may choose from a variety of integrated-skills classes, grammar classes and communication workshops. The content of each class uses real-life topics relevant to students' lives and lively, dynamic and effective methods that help students explore the English language and become comfortable in expressing their ideas and opinions.

- Monday/Wednesday from 5:35 pm to 7:30 pm and/or
   7:40 pm to 9:35 pm
- Tuesday/Thursday from 5:35 pm to 6:50 pm and/or
   7:00 pm to 8:15 pm and/or 8:25 pm to 9:40 pm
- 3 to 18 Academic hours/week for 8 weeks
- Levels: Beginner through Advanced
- Students can choose to take one, two, three, or four 
  classes in the following areas: Listening, Speaking and 
  Vocabulary Building, Reading, Writing and Vocabulary
  Building, Essential Grammar, and Communication
  Workshops.

The English for Success Evening Program consists of the following classes

· Listening, Speaking and Vocabulary Building
· Reading, Writing and Vocabulary Building
· Essential Grammar
· Communication Workshops

In all English for Success classes, students work in pairs and groups. We believe that cooperative tasks help students explore the language and become comfortable in expressing their ideas and opinions. Self evaluation charts help students track their progress throughout the course. Students receive progress reports from their teachers at the end of each semester.


Listening, Speaking, and Vocabulary Building

The goal of our Listening, Speaking, and Vocabulary Building classes is to provide you with the skills and confidence you need to speak and interact comfortably in your life in the United States. English for Success teachers use a communicative methodology that helps students develop fluency and accuracy in speaking English.

Each class
· integrates listening, speaking and pronunciation practice
· uses a variety of activities based on popular topics
· prepares students for real-world speaking situations
  such as solving problems, exchanging information, and
  describing their experiences
· develops essential listening skills
· provides pronunciation practice in meaningful contexts
· teaches new words and idioms


Reading, Writing and Vocabulary Building
The goal of our Reading, Writing and Vocabulary Building classes is to provide you with the reading and writing skills and vocabulary you need in your work and social life. English for Success teachers use a communicative methodology that encourages students to explore and discuss new ideas, share experiences and express themselves in writing.

Each class
· provides opportunities to read and talk about a variety of
  texts, such as  newspaper articles and stories 
· uses writing models and follow-up activities that build
  students' confidence in expressing themselves on paper
· teaches the writing that people need for work, such as e-
  mails and memos
· helps students expand their vocabulary base and their
  understanding of how words are formed and used


Essential Grammar
The goal of our Essential Grammar classes is to provide you with an awareness of how grammar is used to communicate meaning in speaking and writing. English for Success teachers use a communicative methodology that presents and practices grammar in conversational and written contexts.

Each class
· teaches grammar through lively activities that incorporate
  listening and speaking
· provides opportunities to use newly-learned grammar in
  work and social contexts


Communication Workshops
Communication Workshops add a new, creative element to the IELI evening program. These multi-skilled classes target specific interests and needs of our students.  You can choose from classes that focus on academic, cultural or work-related themes. Topics may change each semester depending on student request.


The following is a list of workshops currently being offered:

All workshops meet on Monday and Wednesday from 7:40 to 9:35 pm

Workshop 1 - Let's Talk!: Understanding & Practicing Conversation in English
                            (Beginner through High-Beginner Levels)

In this class students will:
· practice conversations needed for everyday living such 
  as telephone calls, making appointments, asking for
  directions and ordering in a restaurant
· improve their listening by watching videos and television
  clips
· improve their pronunciation by learning and practicing
  the basic sounds of English
· learn and use American idioms in everyday speech


Workshop 2 – Big Apple Talk: Conversation and Idioms
                        (High-Beginner through Intermediate levels)

In this class students will
· improve their listening, speaking and pronunciation skills
· practice conversations needed for everyday living in New 
  York
· talk about what's happening in the "Big Apple" and learn
  about different cultural events
· learn American idioms and practice using them in
  conversation


Workshop 3 – Speak and Be Understood:  Practice in Pronunciation
                 (Intermediate through High-Intermediate levels)

In this class students will:
· learn how to accurately speak the sounds of American 
  English
· learn to communicate in a confident and natural way
· improve their overall speaking skills through a variety of
  hands-on activities including story-telling, skits, and
  short presentations


Workshop 4 – Lecture Ready: Academic Listening, Note-Taking and  Presentation Skills
                    (Intermediate through High-Intermediate levels)

In this class students will:
· improve their listening skills by listening to academic
  lectures on a variety of high-interest topics
· build confidence in speaking through discussing,
  summarizing, responding and making short
  presentations
· learn note-taking strategies which are essential tools in
  any college classroom


Workshop 5 – English Through Hollywood Film: Speaking, Listening and Vocabulary
                         (High-Intermediate through Advanced levels)

In this class students will watch and discuss one or more full-length films as a fun and creative way to:
· improve conversation and listening skills
· build vocabulary and idioms
· learn about the cultural background of the film


Workshop 6 – American Voices: Listening and Conversation about American Culture
                         (High-Intermediate through Advanced levels)

In this class students will:
· improve their listening and speaking skills by listening to
  radio broadcasts and watching segments of movies and
  TV shows
· discuss various aspects of American culture and analyze
  spoken English to help them to become more effective
  listeners
· improve their vocabulary, pronunciation, and use of
  colloquial language

Workshop 7 – The News In Print: Discussing and Debating the News
                         (High-Intermediate through Advanced levels)

In this class students will:
· improve their listening and speaking skills through the 
  study of current news topics
· read and discuss articles from top New York newspapers
  such as "The New York Times", "The New York Post" 
  and "The Daily News"
· focus on articles which encourage discussion, opinion-
  giving and debate
· build and improve their vocabulary and idiomatic use of
  English by actively using the language in context


Workshop 8 - TOEFL Preparation: Focus on Listening and Speaking                   
                         (High-Intermediate through Advanced levels)

In this class students will
· increase their ability to understand conversations and
  talks found on the new TOEFL iBT
· expand their vocabulary and knowledge of English word
  formation
· develop test-taking strategies specifically needed to 
  score high on the TOEFL iBT
· get practice organizing, preparing and presenting talks in
  preparation for the speaking section of the TOEFL iBT


Workshop 9 – TOEFL Preparation: General Review and Test-Tasking Strategies
                         (High-Intermediate through Advanced levels)

In this class students will:
· be introduced to all of the components of the new TOEFL
  iBT exam
· increase the speed at which they take the exam through
  practice exams
· get an excellent review of grammar, syntax, vocabulary
  and idioms as well as practice for the written portions of
  the TOEFL iBT


Workshop 10 – Pronunciation Power: Intensive Practice in Pronunciation
                         (High-Intermediate through Advanced levels)

In this class students will:
· learn how to voice the unique sounds of American
  English
· build English conversational skills and social self-
 confidence
· improve all speaking skills by participating in a variety of
  interactive exercises


Workshop 11 – What to Say and How to Say it: Learning to Communicate with Confidence
                         (High-Intermediate through Advanced levels)

In this class students will:
· build confidence in their speaking through role playing
  and other communication exercises
· interact with each other by giving individual and group
  presentations on a variety of subjects
· improve their vocabulary, pronunciation, and general
  speaking and listening skills in a fun and lively
  atmosphere
