Meet Lang from Korea

Lang is an artist from Korea who is trying to make it in New York City.  She is interviewed by Geovanny Olivero.

Hi Kim Hyun.  Where are you from?

I'm from Korea.

How long have you been in NYC?

I've been here for one and a half years.

Why did you decide to come to the United States - specifically NYC?

I came here in order to learn more about the arts.  NYC is the center of the art world. There's Chelsea where all the galleries are, a lot of museums...NYC is a dream for every artist to exhibit their work.

What were you doing in your country before coming to NYC?

I was a teacher's assistant and a teacher of Art in College.

How long have you studying English as a Second Language at IELI?

I've been studying for almost a year.

What was your major while you were a student in Korea?

Studio art.

Are you thinking of developing your career in this country?

Of course yes.  I'm thinking of improving my career and my art work too.

What are your plans for the future?

I have already applied to a graduate art program in NYC, and I hope to be accepted.

Now that I have seen your work in art, both cubistic and abstract, can you tell me which you prefer more?

I can't separate both work because my cubistic work is abstract, and that is my painting style.

Why are you a painter?

My mother encouraged me since she was a painter too.  My mother comes from a family of artists - dancers, singers and painters.

When did you begin to paint?

I began to paint when I was six.  I saw my mother painting since I was a child and that motivated me to go to an art school in order to learn painting formally.  So, I've been painting for 20 years.

I know that you won a painting contest in your country, do you expect to exhibit your painting in NYC?

Of course yes, I'm trying to exhibit my work in NYC, that's my goal and dream.

Is it difficult to achieve that goal?

Yes it is.  First of all it is very expensive to open an exhibition and I don't have any sponsor yet, but I'm trying.

Do you think people in NYC like abstract painting?

They really like abstract painting, and they are very familiar with it

What do you express in your painting?

My feeling and emotions.  I just draw and color it on the canvas.

What do you mean when you say feelings and emotions?

Any kind of feeling, it doesn't matter if I feel sad or happy, angry etc....

Thanks, Lang I wish the best of luck to you in NYC.
