A Useful Way For ESL Students To Study English,
by Hansoon Oh
Every year many different people come to New York to study English, regardless of age. When they first come to New York, these people look for opportunities to meet native speakers and hang out together. However, they quickly realize that meeting and hanging out with Americans is not easy, and unexpectedly they often find themselves hanging out with other people from the same country as them. Because of this, many become frustrated about studying English in New York. Therefore, many former ESL students said that they had to study English alone even though they were living abroad.
The first step in improving your English is watching TV - even advertisements. And if people want to study something more enjoyable, studying movies or drama series like ‘Friends', ‘CSI' or ‘Prison Break' etc. is more effective. Libraries are also a very useful way to have access to materials such as books, music CDs, DVDs, audio books, TV program series etc. for students who are studying English.
The New York Public Libraries in NYC are designed in such a way as to easily and simply borrow materials. And anyone can join various activities such as: taking English classes, volunteering for the NYPL, joining events at libraries etc. If you want to learn about available services, check out the website below.
The website' address is ‘http://www.nypl.org/branch/' and the services are:
• How to get a library card
• How to find a book
• How to renew a book
• How to reserve a book
• How to research a topic
• How to learn English
• How to find events
• How to find exhibitions
and much, much more!
If you want a convenient NYPL branch, I recommend the mid-Manhattan library which is located at 40th Street and Fifth Avenue.
